It certainly makes it more horrifying for me. I don't know if this explanation makes The Follower MORE or LESS horrifying for you. There are many examples of the different forms it takes on, and you can interpret the purpose of each one however you want. But when it finally has you cornered, it takes on its final form. Sometimes, it seems like its only motivation is to get closer to you. For example, before Greg's death, it appeared as Greg to fool Jay for as much time as possible, and also to break his window and enter his house. Without this foreknowledge, it wouldn't have the ability to know when to appear in what form.Įach of its appearances happens to fulfill a specific purpose. It has some kind of insight into determined causality of events. It takes various forms until, somehow, it knows when it will be able to destroy your body in its very specific way It's motivation isn't always to immediately kill you. So, this implies a few things about The Follower: If any of you missed that detail, it was revealed subtly, by a photograph beside her bed. Lastly, we have Jay's final Follower, who appears as her father. This scene is one of the most horrifying of the movie, so visceral, so brutal, so disturbed and so difficult to mention that after my boyfriend and I walked out of the movie for the first time, we didn't even talk about it for most of our conversation. Next, we saw Greg's mom, who breaks his neck and then rapes him. The movie wanted us to make that connection. Hugh/Jeff's mom was the naked woman in the abandoned building.

If anyone noticed why the camera lingered for so long on Hugh/Jeff's mom when we finally met her, THAT IS WHY. First, we see Hugh/Jeff's mom, in the abandoned building. Instead, it marks an important repetition we see throughout the movie:in every case, the final Follower each character sees is of their parent, walking towards them. I don't, however, believe that The Follower's form when it killed Greg was simply out of convenience. It's simply unfortunate that Greg was cornered when The Follower was in the guise of his mother.

From Greg's death, we know that the Follower finds you, and then brutally rapes and murders you. It's easy to remember that Greg is basically fucked to death by his mom, but again, the mom detail can easily be ignored if we remember one simple rule: The Follower takes whatever form is most useful to it. What's missing, however, is the discussion about the parents. The Follower may also represent the anxiety of STDs, adulthood, the fear of poverty (Yara has an important monologue about Detroit).I've read a slew of interpretations, few of which completely miss the mark. If you aren't vigilant, if you can't keep swimming you end up like a bad game of twister. But what follows? A demon, perhaps, but it doesn't take a film student at Tisch to see that The Follower (as I'll call it) is a metaphor for something.
